It’s estimated that over 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean annually, a number expected to nearly triple by 2040 if no action is taken.

Abandoned nets and lines — continues to trap and kill marine creatures long after being discarded. Coral reefs, vital for biodiversity, suffer from physical damage and toxins released by degrading plastics.

While it includes metals, glass, rubber, and chemicals, plastic accounts for up to 80% of marine litter. This waste originates from many sources — from litter washed off streets and storm drains to fishing gear lost at sea and poorly managed landfills along coastlines.

Once in the water, plastics break down into microplastics, tiny fragments less than 5 millimeters in size. These microplastics spread across every corner of the ocean — from surface waters to the deepest trenches — and have even been found in Arctic ice and human bloodstreams.
